New PTIN Requirements for Tax Return Preparers

 September 21, 2011

IRS New regulations require all paid tax return preparers to obtain a PTIN. Renewals for 2012 are expected to start in October 2011. In the future, some preparers will need to pass a competency test and background check, and take continuing education courses. You can check for more guidance once IRS releases it. If you haven't done so already, you can apply for your PTIN in 4 easy steps:
1Create Your Account

Create a new PTIN account using the online PTIN sign-up system. This account is different from e-Services.

2Apply For Your PTIN

Complete the online PTIN application. You will need to provide some personal information, including information about your previous year's tax return and professional credentials. Here is the checklist of what you need before you get started:

  • Social Security Number
  • Personal information (name, mailing address, date of birth)
  • Business information (name, mailing address, telephone number)
  • Previous year’s individual tax return (name, address, filing status) 1
  • Explanations for any felony convictions 2
  • Explanations for problems with your U.S. individual or corporate tax obligations 2
  • Credit or debit card for the $64.25 PTIN user fee
  • If applicable, any U.S.-based professional certification information (CPA, attorney, enrolled agent, enrolled retirement plan agent, enrolled actuary, certified acceptance agent, or state license) including certification number and state of issuance

If you already have a PTIN, you will NOT be asked to enter it in this new application. You may or may not get the same PTIN at the end of the sign-up process.

After you obtain your PTIN, you will receive information about next steps including testing and continuing education requirements (if applicable).

3Pay Your Fee
Pay the $64.25 user fee via credit card or direct debit.

4Get Your PTIN

Get your PTIN. Review the welcome letter you receive to understand your future obligations. Keep your PTIN and account information in a safe place for future reference.

The IRS PTIN sign-up system is generally unavailable from midnight until approximately 8:00 AM ET each Sunday morning while regular system maintenance is performed.

Save time — apply online!
It only takes about 15 minutes to sign up online and receive your PTIN. If you opt to use the paper application, Form W-12, IRS Paid Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) Application, it will take 4-6 weeks to process.

NOTE: IRS will not accept any paper Form W-12's received between September 27 and October 16, 2011 while we make changes to the Form in anticipation of the upcoming renewal cycle.
